Firewise!

We have been learning how to be Firewise and what we can do to stay safe. We have identified safe and unsafe fires and what to do in case of a fire. We get down, get low, get out, FAST!
We call 111 and tell the operator our address, what is on fire and if anyone is hurt.
It was great having Fireman Darren Shackleton come and share videos with us about how to be Firewise. We heard a smoke alarm and yelled FIRE FIRE FIRE as we evacuated the building and assembled in a Safe Meeting Place. Take a look at us getting down, getting low and getting out as we evacuated the Muritai Centre! A big thanks again to Darren for coming to teach us today.
"C'mon on guys, get firewise!!"

Fires double in size every 30 seconds.

Beep Beep Beep goes the smoke alarm! Look at that black 'smoke'!

We safely got down, got low and got out under the smoke and out to safety.

Shake Out!

Today our school participated in the National event Shake Out. We learnt what to do to prepare for an earthquake such as having supplies of food, water, a torch and batteries. We know to DROP COVER HOLD if inside during an earthquake and assume the TURTLE position if outside. After an earthquake we evacuate to a safe place outside.
Today we were outside during the Shake Out so we assumed the turtle position. We evacuated to the field with the rest of the school until it was safe to return to class.
Check out our pics!

States of Matter!

In Room One we have been learning about states of matter: solids, liquids and gasses. We have been doing lots of experiments to see how materials changes state when heated and cooled. Have a look at the fun we have been having...

We filled gloves with liquid water and they froze into solid ice!

We poured salt onto the ice hand, we heard it cracking and it started to melt.

We made ice blocks to explore the differences between Juice in solid and liquid state.

We poured hot water onto an ice hand to watch it melt to liquid. It didn't disappear, it just changed state.

Composting with Sarah Langi!

We learned how to make a compost! We learned the difference between greens and browns and that an effective compost pile has layers of each. We put in browns like hay, pea straw, dead leaves and paper. We put in greens like food scraps, horse poo and seaweed. Compost also needed water and warmth. When the worms eat the greens and browns they turn it into rich soil, great for growing vegetables. Take a look!

How to have a zero waste lunch!

We were lucky to have Sarah Langi come to teach us about how to pack in-pack out with our lunchboxes. We joined in with Room 12 and had to identify the types of rubbish that comes to school and how to minimise it. We learned that plastic and cling wrap are bad for the earth in landfills. Things like food scraps and paper are ok because they can be composted back into the earth.
Take a look at us as we learn how to be a zero hero! Thank you Sarah!

Cling wrap is bad for the environment and animals.

We ranked lunchboxes with most to least rubbish.

Davina is placing the zero hero lunchbox on top.

Lunchboxes with compartments are great because we don't need to wrap up our food.

Small washable containers can also be used to hold things like grapes, nuts or crackers.
